Why Does the Touchpad Stop Working After Windows 11?

Windows 11 introduced a changed power management policy for HID devices (Human Interface Devices) and USB controllers. The system became more aggressive about shutting down input devices in power-saving mode — and older touchpad controllers (Synaptics, Elan, I2C HID) don't always wake back up properly after such a shutdown.

Result: touchpad disables and remains unresponsive until restart. If restart only helps temporarily, the cause might be mechanical wear on the touchpad — described in our touchpad replacement guide. The issue particularly affects laptops shipped with Windows 10, later upgraded to Windows 11.

Which Models Are Most Affected?

• ThinkPad T470, T470s, T480, T480s - most frequently reported
• ThinkPad E480, E580, E490, E590
• ThinkPad L480, L580, L490, L590
• ThinkPad T440, T450, T460 - older series
• IdeaPad 3, IdeaPad 5 from 2019-2021 generations
• Yoga 530, 730 and other convertibles from the Windows 10 era

The issue appears regardless of touchpad driver version and is reproducible after every restart — until you change the settings described below.

Solution - Step by Step

1. Open Device Manager
   Right-click Start and select Device Manager, or press Win+R, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
2. Locate the touchpad in the device list
   Expand Mice and other pointing devices. Look for an entry named Touchpad, Clickpad, I2C HID Device, or the manufacturer name (Synaptics SMBus TouchPad, ELAN I2C Touchpad).
3. Disable power management for the touchpad
   Right-click the touchpad entry → Properties → Power Management tab. Uncheck:
   "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
   Click OK.
4. Repeat for the I2C controller (if applicable)
   In System devices, find Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller entries. There may be 2-3 listings — for each one, disable power management the same way as step 3.
5. Restart the computer
   After reboot, the touchpad should work stably.

What If This Doesn't Work?

• Uninstall the touchpad driver - In Device Manager, right-click the entry → Uninstall device. Restart — Windows will install the default HID driver, which often works better with older models.
• Check BIOS - Enter BIOS (F1 key at startup on ThinkPad) and make sure Internal Pointing Device or TrackPoint / TouchPad is enabled (Enabled).
• Update drivers manually - Download the touchpad driver directly from support.lenovo.com by searching your model, rather than relying on Windows Update.

When Does a Touchpad Need Replacement?

If the above methods don't help, it may indicate physical damage to the touchpad or the ribbon cable connecting it to the motherboard. Signs suggesting hardware failure:

• Touchpad completely unresponsive (even fresh after restart)
• Clicking works but touch surface doesn't — or vice versa
• Touchpad responds only in one corner
• Cursor drifts or moves on its own
